Brunei

Brunei was in fact as boring as it is advertised. The Gentleman Friend was unwell, though as I said to him, he could hardly have picked a better holiday spot to feel unwell in. The Empire hotel was blingy and expensive and had a Costa del Sol feel to the pool areas but comfortable and nearly empty. We went sightseeing on one day, it was a nice sight (there is only one). We also went to the water village. I wanted to try ambuyat, the tasteless sago paste that is the national dish, but the GF was not feeling up to it so we had an Italian meal instead. There was virtually no way to get around without a car of one’s own.

I should admit, we didn’t do the actual main attractions in Brunei: the rainforest is supposed to be lovely (but we had just returned from one a fortnight earlier) and the swimming/ snorkelling is supposed to be good.

I enjoyed seeing the flames shooting up from the deep sea oil rigs on the horizon.

And I got a bit of writing done.
